The best way to visit Paris Catacombs!

I have been waiting to visit the Catacombs for years and finally did it! Booked this small group tour, and I highly recommend everyone do the same. It is so much better than visiting the catacombs alone. Guides had access to a couple of locked areas, and we had an opportunity to learn much more about the cemeteries of Paris. Also, the guide told us some things that we wouldn't learn otherwise. Great, unique history in the catacombs.

This tour will take you to the areas inside the catacombs that are not available with a regular Paris catacombs ticket. I would also recommend booking this tour as soon as possible because it sells out very quickly!

DESCRIPTION

Paris Catacombs Tour

On this tour, you will have an opportunity to explore the mysterious underground tunnels and unique rooms of the Paris catacombs, accompanied by a knowledgeable, informative tour guide. Get the most out of your visit to the dark underworld by listening to chilling stories from your tour guide.

Find out who worked, visited, and has been buried here for centuries. Explore a variety of labyrinthine passages that were originally mined for limestone and are now home to over 6 million Parisians’ bones, buried here in the 18th century when Paris faced severe urban challenges like overcrowded cemeteries and poor sanitation, which created serious health risks for the city.

As a result, the remains were moved here in discreet operations to remove them from the city’s unclean and overcrowded cemeteries. Meanwhile, the royal family had moved their court and government to Versailles, where they enjoyed dazzling royal grandeur and luxury. To better understand this stark contrast between the poverty and wealth of the time, book your Versailles ticket for the next day and experience the lavish world of the French monarchy.

PRO TIP

Some sections of the Catacombs are behind locked gates opened only for your group. Once you pass through, doors may be re-secured behind you, so don’t linger too far back taking photos. Stay close to the guide at all times, or you may need staff to reopen access.

Catacombs Tour in Paris – Valuable Tips

Exploring the Paris catacombs is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in this city. It’s amazing that you can head down to the city’s underground tunnels and learn how they were actually made. For some people, this will be a little creepy or weird experience, but visiting the underground catacombs while in Paris should not be missed. To help you fully enjoy your visit, we prepared some valuable tips that you should be aware of before your visit.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket.

You will be surprised how cold the Paris catacombs are! The average temperature inside the catacombs during the entire year is 14 Celsius or 57 Fahrenheit, so this isn’t a place for sundresses! Also, we strongly recommend wearing a pair of comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of walking.

Don’t bring large bags with you.

To ensure the safety and preservation of the ossuary, bags over 40cm x 30cm aren’t allowed inside the catacombs, and there is no luggage storage on site. Also, you won’t be able to carry your backpack like usual. Instead, you will need to carry it in front of you or by hand.

This one should be obvious, but DON’T touch the bones.

This probably shouldn’t need to be said, but touching the objects inside the catacombs is strictly forbidden. Just because there’s no barrier between 6 million skeletons and you does not mean you can touch them.

The exit from the Paris catacombs isn’t the same as the entrance.

It’s only a short walk away, so it’s not a big deal, but if you have someone waiting for you at the top, it’s worth knowing that you won’t return to where you started! Walking through these intriguing and shadowy tunnels feels even easier when you know that just 20 minutes from the exit, one of Paris’s best views awaits, so make sure to book your Montparnasse Tower ticket in advance.

How to Visit the Paris Catacombs?

If you want to discover the entire history of the Paris catacombs or simply explore all the secret rooms and sections that are hard to find on your own, going on a guided tour of the Paris catacombs is the right choice for you!

The Paris catacombs are genuinely one of the most significant underground sights in the world, and their long and torrid history, from religious rituals to illicit parties and the politics behind their construction, makes it the perfect place for an in-depth tour.

Good to know before you go

  • As there are 130 steps leading to the Paris Catacombs and 112 steps leading out, it is recommended that you have a good level of physical strength.
  • The Catacombs are 20 meters (65 feet) below the ground, and the tunnels are very narrow in some places.
  • Please keep in mind that the tunnels can be very slippery, and the temperature remains at 57°F (14°C), even during the summer months. So, we highly advise you to dress appropriately when exploring the city's catacombs.
  • Only 200 visitors are allowed inside the catacombs at the same time. Please be aware that if the number of visitors reaches a maximum, the staff have the right to hold the lines at the entrance until there is enough space inside.
  • Please bring your passport or ID, as it is mandatory to show it on all tours.

Meeting Point

The tour's meeting point is right in front of the Café Oz, 3 Place Denfert - Rochereau, next to the exit of the Denfert - Rochereau Metro. Your guide will be holding a sign with " The Tour Guy" on it.

PRO TIP

It stays around 57°F (14°C) underground, but it feels surprisingly humid and heavy rather than simply cool. Bring a light, breathable layer you can easily remove, because the narrow tunnels warm you up fast once you start walking.
